Princeton, NJ- The Brown women's water polo (1-1) team opened the 2012 season with a 12-9 victory over Colorado State, but was edged 10-9 by George Washington at the Princeton Invitational this weekend.
Katharine Booher (Palo Alto, CA) and Madison Pepper (Baytown, TX) each tallied five goals apiece to lead the Bears offense, while Evan Cranston (Palo Alto, CA) tallied nine saves in the cage vs. Colorado State and Sarah Shin (Fullerton, CA) earned five against George Washington.
Colorado State jumped out to a 3-2 lead over the Bears in the first quarter of lay, but the Bears came back to outscore Colorado 3-2 in the second and 5-2 in the third to head into the final quarter with a 10-7 lead. Both squads netted two goals apiece in the fourth quarter as the Bears earned the 12-9 victory.
Leading the offense was Booher, Kate Woods (La Jolla, CA) and Pepper with three goals each, while Brittany Westerman (Palo Alto, CA), Emily McNamara (Winters, CA) and Claudia Ruiz (Sacramento, CA) each added one.
In game two vs. GW, the Colonials gained a 4-3 lead in the first eight minutes and then both teams scored one goal each in the second quarter. Brown edged George Washington in scoring in the third, 3-2, but GW topped Brown in the fourth 3-2 to come out on top 10-9.
Sarah Presant (Poway, CA), Ruiz, Booher and Pepper led the offense with two goals each, while McNamara tallied one.
