Bloomington, IN- Kate Woods (Fr., La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla) and Joanna Wohlmuth (Sr., Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) combined for nine goals as Brown University outmatched Mercyhurst College 15-8 to finish ninth at the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship at Indiana University's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
The Bears clinch the No. 9 placement based on a 2-0 record in round robin play for the final three places in the position as Brown previously defeated Gannon University 11-8 in the first game on Day Two of the championship. Mercyhurst finishes 10th as the Lakers defeated Gannon 16-6 in the final contest of Day Two.
Leading 2-1 following the first period, the Bears outscored the Lakers 9-3 over the next two periods to carry a 6-4 advantage into halftime and an 11-4 lead into the fourth period.
The deficit was too much for Mercyhurst to overcome in eight minutes as the teams exchanged goals to the final horn and a seven-goal Bears' victory.
In addition to Woods and Wohlmuth, Samantha Ryu (Jr., Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) chipped in a pair of markers, while four other players found the back of the cage for the Bears.
Rebecca Wright (Fr., Lindsay, Ontario/Lindsay Collegiate), Nicole Nelson (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), Rachel Griepsma (Sr., Lindsay, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Lisett Calderon (So., Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) netted pairs of goals for Mercyhurst to account for all of the Lakers' scoring.
Between the pipes, Hope Rozelle (Jr., San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) made four saves in taking the loss, while Browns' Sarah Shin (Fr., Fullerton, Calif./Sunny Hills) notched four stops in earning the victory.
