Bears Split in First Day of ECAC Championship

Lewisburg, PA- The Brown University women's water polo team narrowly fell to Harvard, 9-5, but defeated Bucknell 10-6 in the first day of the ECAC Championship fifth-place game hosted at Bucknell.

Against the Crimson, Brown fell behind 2-1 in the first eight minutes of play, but the Bears came back in the second outscoring Harvard 3-1 to lead 4-3 at the intermission. But Harvard shut down the Bears in the third quarter, 3-0, and went on to outscore Brown 3-1 in the fourth to earn the win.

Freshman Kate Woods led the offense with three goals, while senior Joanna Wohlmuth and sophomore Katharine Booher each chipped in with one. Freshman Sarah Shin picked up eight saves in the cage to lead the defense.

Against the Bison, the Bears jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first quarter and jumped out to 7-2 lead in the second quarter. However, Bucknell was able to notch two goals to Brown's one in the third quarter to cut the Bison's deficit to four, and then matched Brown in scoring, 2-2, in the fourth as the Bears clinched the 10-6 win.

Freshman Emily McNamara, Wohlmuth, freshman Sarah Presant, Booher and Woods all netted two goals in the win, and Shin led the defense with six saves.
