Water Polo’s Stephanie Laing Named CWPA Defensive Player of the Week

Providence, RI- Brown University senior goalie Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) stopped 24 shots over three games to lead the Bears to sixth place finish at the 2010 Eastern Championship and earn the May 3 Women's Varsity Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week award.

In a 1-2 weekend for the Bears at the Eastern Championship hosted by the University of Maryland, she recorded 10 saves in an 8-5 opening round loss to then No. 14-ranked Indiana University. In the consolation bracket, she stopped nine shots in an 8-5 victory over the host Terrapins, before recording five saves in an 8-7 overtime loss to then No. 19-ranked Bucknell University in the fifth place game as Brown finished sixth in the eight team field.

The single game (24), season (283 in 2009) and career (1,118) saves leader at Brown, Laing concluded the season with 372 saves in 1,053 minutes for a 8.82 goals against average and .584 save percentage in leading the Bears to a 19-15 record and a runner-up finish in the Northern Division.

The award marks her seventh Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week nod and the 10th weekly award from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) in her career. A three-time Northern Division Player of the Week (February 16 & April 27, 2009; March 19, 2007), she previously garnered the Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week award on February 22, March 1, March 8, March 29, April 5 and April 19.
