Presant's Hat-Trick Leads Brown Water Polo to 8-5 Victory over Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Lauren Presant (Sr., Poway, Calif./Poway) recorded a hat-trick and Joanna Wohlmuth (Jr., Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) added a pair of markers as the Brown University Bears defeated the University of Maryland 8-5 to advance to the fifth place game at the 2010 Eastern Championship at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center.
The Bears will take on No. 19-ranked Bucknell University at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 2 in the fifth place game, while Maryland will face-off with Harvard University at 10:00 a.m. in the seventh place contest.
Brown never trailed in the game opening up a 3-1 lead in the first period thanks to a natural goal by Wohlmuth (7:19) along with a pair of man-up tallies by Presant (2:48, 00:14) to take the lead and never look back. Maryland's Meaghan Powers (Jr., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) put the Terrapins on the board in the period with an even0strength skip-shot at the 5:36 mark.
The second period saw little scoring as only a man-up goal by Brittany Westerman (Fr., Palo Alto, Calif./Deerfield Academy) changed the scoreboard to make it 4-1 at the break in favor of the Bears.
Maryland attempted to rally back with a natural goal by Simone Lewis (Fr., Auckland, New Zealand/Diocesan School) off a crossing pass at 5:15 and a power-play tally by Allison Campbell (Fr., Maple Ridge, B.C./Maple Ridge Secondary) at 4:48 to move the Terrapins to within 4-3. Ally Beck (Jr., Mission Viego, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) erased the deficit 43 seconds later with a drive to the cage leading to a ball dumped past Brown netmider Stephanie Laing (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) to equal the damage at 4-4 with 4:05 remaining in the period.
However, the remainder of the period was all ursuline as Wohlmuth struck for an even-handed score at 2:57 and Katharine Booher (Fr., Palo Alto, Calif./Castilleja) scared up a man-up marker at 1:24 to put the Bears back in front 6-4.
The margin expanded to 7-4 at the start of the fourth period as Presant notched a score off an exclusion at 6:23. Maryland attempted to rally back once again, starting wtih a score by Campbell at 3:52, but Sarah Glick (Sr., Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista) stamped out the comeback hopes with the Bears' sixth man-up goal on eight attempts with 2:08 to play for a three-goal victory and a shot at fifth place on Sunday.
In goal, Laing stopped nine shots to earn the win for Brown, while Shelby Reyes (So., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) grabbed eight shots for the Terrapins.
