In its final day competing on the west coast, the Brown University women’s water polo team earned a thrilling 7-6 overtime victory against Cal State San Bernardino, but fell 11-7 to UC San Diego.
Brown went just two of 17 on its power play, but was able to play good enough defense to force its game against the Coyotes into overtime. The two teams went goal for goal in each of the quarters, but freshman Claudia Ruiz scored the game-winner in the second overtime to give the Bears the victory.
Sarah Glick tallied two goals in the win and handed out two assists, while Rita Bullwinkel, Samantha Ryu, Ruiz, Joanna Wohlmuth and Lauren Presant each added one. Laing tallied 10 save in the net to lead Brown’s defense.
In game two, San Diego jumped out to a 6-2 lead and increased it to 7-2 by halftime. Brown’s power play failed them again, as they were just two for 11. Both squads tallied two markers in the third quarter and Brown was able to outscore the Tritans 3-2 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome its early deficit.
Presant and Glick each tallied two goals, while Avery Mosser, Wohlmuth and Brittany Westerman each added one. Laing earned 11 saves in net. Glick also handed out two assists and two steals.
