Women’s Water Polo Starts 2010 Season 2-0

Cambridge, MA- The Brown University women’s water polo team began the 2010 season with wins against Siena College and Villanova during the Harvard Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Bears rolled to a 14-4 victory against the Saints and followed it up with a 12-4 win against the Wildcats.

“This was a good way to start our season,” said Head Coach Felix Mercado. “I felt that we played two complete games, but I also know we have a lot of work to do to achieve our goals.”

The Bears jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first eight minutes of play against the Saints, as sophomore Samantha Ryu (Santa Barbara, CA) and junior Joanna Wohlmuth (Manhattan Beach, CA) led Bruno’s offense with three goals apiece. Brown kept up its offensive intensity as seven different Bears scored goals during the win, as both Katherine Booher (Palo Alto, CA) and Brittany Westerman (Palo Alto, CA) tallied their first collegiate goals.

The Bears went on to outscore Siena 5-1 in the second and third quarters, and then scored three to Siena’s two in the fourth to cruise to the win. Senior Stephanie Laing (Ann Arbor, MI) led the defensive effort with 11 saves in goal, while junior Rita Bullwinkel (Portola Valley, CA) dished out three assists and picked up two steals for a solid performance.

Senior Sarah Glick (Bonita, CA), senior Lauren Presant (Poway, CA) and Booher added two goals apiece, while junior Katherine Stanton (Danville, CA) and Westerman registered one each.

The outstanding play of Glick helped Brown to its 12-4 win against Nova. Glick scored three goals, handed out six assists, and picked up three steals, and then went on to pick up two saves in net to shut out the Wildcats in the fourth quarter.

The Bears outscored the Wildcats 8-3 after the first two quarters, and went on to score four goals to Nova’s one in the final two quarters for the win. Wohlmuch, Glick and Presant scored three goals apiece, followed by Westerman with two and Stanton with one.

On the defensive end, Booher exploded for six steals while fellow rookie Claudia Ruiz (Sacramento, CA) added four steals. In net, Laing tallied nine saves in 29 minutes, while Glick came in for the final three minutes of the game and picked up two saves.

The Bears are back in action on Feb. 20 when the squad takes on George Washington at 9:00 a.m. at Princeton, and follows it up with a 4:00 p.m. game against Gannon.
