Brown Women's Volleyball opened the 2001 season this weekend, participating in the University of San Diego Invitational. In the first match of the tournament, the Bears battled Seton Hall University, defeating the Pirates in a 2 hour and 16 minute match, (27-30, 30-27, 28-30, 30-28, 15-13).
Both teams came out on fire Friday afternoon for the opening game of the tournament. Throughout the match, the teams appeared even in almost every category, but in the end Head Coach Diane Short and the Bears won the final and deciding game, 15-13.
On the offensive end, Senior Corre Myer (Corona de Mar, CA) proved she is ready to lead the Bears this season, as she recorded 58 assists and 18 digs. Myer suffered a season-ending knee-injury during 2000, but showed no traces of the injury on Friday. Sophomore Diane Schneider (Saratoga, CA) had an impressive match for the Bears with 16 kills and 12 digs. The junior duo of Angela Dunn (Anchorage, AK) and Jessie Cooper (Tustin, CA) demonstrated, both, strong defensive and attack efforts. Dunn and Cooper tallied 13 and16 kills, respectively. Dunn also recorded eight digs.
Later on Friday, Brown took on the host team, the University of San Diego. It took the Toreros took only three games to defeat the Bears. Junior Noel Frohman (Round Rock, TX) led San Diego with 15 kills and 7 digs. Senior Ali Martin (Paso Robles, CA) tallied 32 assists and 4 digs.For the Bears, Diane Schneider recorded eight kills and 12 digs, while Freshman Elvina Kung (Dix Hills, NY) had 14 assists and six digs.
The Bears (1-1) continue action in the San Diego Invite Saturday, September 8 when they battle the University of Minnesota and San Jose State University.
