Providence - Diane Short, Head Volleyball Coach, announced the co-captains for the 2005 season. They are juniors Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT) and Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore Shawn Tulac (Claremont, CA).
Martin, who was co-captain of the 2004 squad, has been a three year starting setter at Brown. She was second in the Ivy League in assists/game last season and also ranked among the best servers in the conference. Over her career, Martin has amassed more than 3000 assists, placing her second all-time in that category. She is currently 1st in career assists/game, and has her name in the record books for assists in a match and assists/game in match as well.
Gibbs was selected Second Team All-Ivy after a strong 2004 campaign in which she registered personal best tallies in nearly every statistical category. She is capable of taking a match over with her powerful hitting (top 5 in the League in kills/game) and intimidating block. Gibbs is on the verge of reaching the 1000 kill milestone and can be expected to end her career among Brown's top five in that category. She is already in the top 5 for career blocks with an eye on moving up the charts.
Tulac struggled with injuries in 2004, but when she was on she was a major contributor. She finished the season with a careet best 22 kills in the season-ending thriller at Yale when the Bears nearly knocked the home team out of the Ivy League title.
Martin, Gibbs, and Tulac are all leaders by example. Their commitment to improving themselves as players is outstanding, and their desire to see Brown Volleyball succeed is unmatched. The coaching staff looks forward to their leadership taking the squad to great things in 2005.
