Volleyball Falls to Penn in Hard-Fought Battle, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown volleyball team (3-13, 2-6) dropped a hard-fought battle to visiting Penn on Friday evening, falling to the Ivy League-leading Quakers (15-4, 8-0), 3-1. Individual game scores were 30-21, 28-30, 30-26, and 30-22.

The Bears were led by sophomore Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA), who posted a match-high 21 kills to go along with four blocks. Freshman Liz Cvitan (Malibu, CA) pitched in 15 kills and a team-leading .367 hitting percentage, while classmates Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) and Victoria Kasten (Norwalk, OH) each added 11 kills with hitting percentages of .300 and .120, respectively. Baldwin led the Bears with two aces on the night, while Kasten added 20 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Defensively, senior Kim Highlund led the way with a match-high 35 digs, breaking Brown's single-match dig record, formerly 34, which was set by Cathy Luke '95 in 1994. Junior Elvina Kung (Dix Hills, NY) added 25 digs. Sophomore setter Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT) directed Brown's offense with 56 assists.

For Penn, Heather Schloat led the hitters with 19 kills and a .462 hitting percentage, while Cara Thomason led the defense with 24 digs, earning a double-double with 12 kills.

The Bears will be back in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Princeton in a 4:00 p.m. Ivy League match.
