Cambridge, MA - Saturday's match between the Brown volleyball team (6-12, 2-4) and Harvard seemed like a mundane three-game sweep for the Bears, 30-25, 30-26, 30-24. However, during the match, juniors Katie Lapinski (Niles, IL) and Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) inched closer to career milestones in their respective specialties. With 23 digs in the match, Lapinski now sits at 999 digs, one away from joining the exclusive 1,000-dig club. Mandolini-Trummel's three blocks put her one away from tying Lauren Gibbs '06 and Aneal Helms '03 for third all-time at Brown for blocks in a career.
In the match itself, the Bears simply outplayed the Crimson, taking the battles in kills (53-43), hitting percentage (.214-.176), assists (49-38) and digs (65-51). Brown even served six aces, including two apiece from Lapinski and sophomore Lyndse Yess (Eugene, OR). Yess led the Bears with a match-high 15 kills, also adding nine digs. Senior co-captain Shawn-Elyse Tulac (Claremont, CA) was right behind with 14 kills and a .323 hitting percentage. Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) finished with 10 kills to give the Bears three in double digits. Sophomore setter Natalie Meyers (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led all players with 45 assists.
Next weekend, the Bears return home to face Princeton and Penn on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
