Providence, RI - Behind a match-high 18 kills apiece from junior Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) and sophomore Lyndse Yess (Eugene, OR), the Brown volleyball team (5-11, 1-3) picked up its first Ivy League victory Saturday, defeating Columbia, 3-1, at the Pizzitola Center. Mandolini-Trummel was a force at the net, adding eight blocks, two solo, to her match-high kill total. Yess followed up her 19 kill, 13 dig performance against Cornell Friday night with 18 kills and 17 digs.
After rolling to a relatively easy win in the first game, the Bears had to deal with a pesky Columbia squad that won the second game and made the third and fourth games much more challenging than the scores would suggest. Game three was tied at 18 before Brown closed things out with a 12-4 run. Similarly, game four saw the Lions holding a 21-19 lead before eight consecutive points gave Bruno control of the game and the match.
Sophomore setter Natalie Meyers (Huntington Beach, CA) had 57 assists and 14 digs, also coming up to the net to get three block assists. Junior libero Katie Lapinski (Niles, IL) led all players with 20 digs to anchor Brown's back line. Senior co-captain Shawn-Elyse Tulac (Claremont, CA) added 14 kills.
The Bears next have their first two-game Ivy League road trip of the season, as they travel north to play Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday and Saturday.
