Fairfield Wins Two Matches in Day One of the 2001 Brown Invitational

The Fairfield Stags defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Brown University in the first day of the Brown invitational. Brown won its first match against Yale, but fell to the Stags in the final match of the night.

In the first match of the day, Fairfield defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 3-0, (30-26, 30-26, 30-28). Joanne Saunders led the Stags with 11 kills and 8 digs. Conny Paul recorded 12 digs in the match as well. Texas A&M's Marcille Cox led the team with 9 kills and 11 digs.

The second match, between Brown and Yale was a typical Ivy contest, hard fought until the end. The Bears came out on top, winning the match in four games, 3-1 (30-27, 31-29, 16-30, 30-25). Diane Schneider totaled 18 kills and 12 digs and Corre Myer recorded 55 assists in the Bear effort. Yale's Dana Loberg recorded 15 digs in the match.

Fairfield won its second match of the day, defeating Brown in the final match of day one, 3-1 (27-30, 30-28, 30-20, 30-27). Laurie Brands totaled 15 kills and 16 digs, while Joanne Saunders recorded 13 kills and 13 digs for the Stags. Brown's Jessie Cooper posted 17 kills and Diane Schneider recorded 11 kills and 14 digs.

The Brown Invitational continues Saturday October 6, with Brown taking on Texas A&M at 5:30pm. The first match of the day will include Texas A&M vs. Fairfield at 10:00am.
