Brown Volleyball Wins Ivy League Opener, Beating Yale, 3-2

Providence, RI - The Brown volleyball team (3-8, 1-0) defeated the visiting Yale Bulldogs (5-4, 0-1), 3-2, the Ivy League Opener for both teams. The Bears won the first two games, 30-22 and 21-30, but Yale came back in the third and fourth games 30-25 and 30-23, forcing a decisive fifth game where Brown came out on top 15-10.
Coming into tonight's match, senior Elvina Kung (Dix Hills, NY) only needed four digs to give her 1000 in her career and 38 to put her in 5th place for All-Time digs. Kung got her 1000th dig early in the first game and finished the match with 38, which moved her into 5th place in Brown's All-Time digs list, tying with Ceneca Calvert with 1023.
Sophomore Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) had an explosive night on offense, igniting the Bears with 21 kills. Junior Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA) followed Baldwin's lead and accounted for 19 kills and four blocks. Freshman Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) had a slow start, but came on strong later in the match to finish with 12 kills. Junior Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT) finished the match with 60 assists which, propelled her into second place for Brown's All-Time assists, passing Christy Mumm.
Mandolini-Trummel was all over the net for Brown defensively, and had nine block,s while sophomore Liz Cvitan (Malibu, CA) added four in the Bears' defensive effort.
Brown will travel to cross-town rival Providence College Saturday, October 2, for a 4:00 start.
