Kingston, RI - In a balanced offensive attacked led by senior setter Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT), the Bears (1-7) were able to break into the win column this evening defeating in state rival Rhode Island 3-1. In the clinching game four victory, the Bear's offense dominated, turning in a combined .481 hitting percentage in the 30-16 victory.
Martin spread out her 40 assists evenly, having four hitters hit in double digit figures where senior Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA) and junior Shawn Tulac led the offensive charge, each posting 12 kills in the win. Junior Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) and sophomore Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) were not far behind notching 11 kills in the four game match. Sophomore Katie Lapinski (Niles, IL) tallied four service aces in tonight's match.
Defensively, Lapinski led the Bears with 11 digs while Martin posted nine digs. Madolini-Trummel turned in an all-around performance for Brown, blocking a match high six of the Rams' attacks, while Gibbs recorded five blocks in the Bears' win.
This weekend the Bears will host the Brown Invitational, taking the floor against Stony Brook University, Manhattan College and 18th ranked Santa Clara in the two day tournament. The Invite will kick off on Friday, September 23 when Santa Clara will face Manhattan at 1:00PM, followed by Manhattan against Stony Brook for a 4:00 PM start and then Brown taking on the Broncos of Santa Clara at 7:00 PM. Day two will open up with Stony Brook facing Santa Clara at 10:00 and then the Bears will have their first of two matches that day, against Stony Brook at 1:00 PM and closing the tournament taking on Manhattan at 6:00 PM.
