Bears Drop Tough Loss To Kentucky 3-2, In Opening Game of Northwestern Invite

Evanston, IL - The Bears (0-5) battled back from two games down, dropping the first two games to Kentucky 30-27 and 30-21, but winning games three and four 30-26 and 30-24 to force a decisive game five. Brown once again found themselves down early falling behind the Wildcats 6-2, but battled back to tie the score at seven before Kentucky ran away with it losing game five 10-15.
Brown, in their most impressive offensive performance this season had four hitters record double digit kills. Leading the way for the Bears was senior Shawn Tulac (Claremont, CA) who finished with 15 kills and three service aces. Junior Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) and sophomore Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) each contributed 13 kills while senior Lauren Gibbs (Los Angeles, CA) recorded eleven kills and two defensive blocks. Mandolini-Trummel posted a match high .571 hitting percentage in the loss. Senior setter Leigh Martin (Freelton, ONT) spread the ball out evenly finishing the match with 45 assists.
Defensively sophomore Lizzie Laundy, who is an Evanston, IL native, led Brown defensively recording 13 digs. Junior Jessica Kondrick (San Diego, CA) was solid at the net on the defensive end, recording a team high four blocks.
Brown will take the floor against host Northwestern, tomorrow Saturday, September 17, at 11:00 AM in the Northwestern Invitational. The Bears will wrap up competition later in the day when they take on Southern Illinois for a 5:00 PM match up.
