UTSA Runs Away From Bears in 3-0 sweep
Sept. 9, 2006
Durham, NH - The Brown volleyball team (1-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season Saturday morning, losing to the University of Texas at San Antonio (5-5-0) in three games. In their second game at the UNH Tournament, the Bears suffered a 30-17 loss in the first game, giving the Roadrunners momentum to take the next two games 30-27 and 30-26.
Bruno's attack failed to generate many points in the first game, as the Bears finished with a hitting percentage below zero. Comparatively, UTSA had a .333 hitting percentage in the opening game. The Roadrunners used just seven players for the entire match, but those seven failed to tire, holding off stronger efforts from the Bears in the second and third games.
Offensively, senior Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) led Brown with 11 kills, and sophomore Natalie Meyers (Huntington, CA) led the squad with 24 assists. Three Brown players had double-digit digs, led by junior Katie Lapinski (Niles, IL), who had 27. Baldwin and freshman Kiana Alzate (La Jolla, CA) chipped in with 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Junior Julie Mandolini-Trummel led the team with 5 blocks, one solo.
The Bears will try to put the loss behind them quickly when they take on San Jose State this afternoon at 4 p.m.
