Coral Gables, FL - Freshman Megan Toman (Newport Beach, CA) recorded a double-double in her first career match on Friday, as the Brown volleyball team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Delaware (9-0), 3-1, in the opening match of the Hurricane Invitational. Toman, starting at outside hitter, had a game-high 17 kills to go with 20 digs in her collegiate debut.
The Blue Hens, with eight matches already under their belts, got out to a 1-0 lead by taking the first game, 30-25. However, the Bears battled back in game two. Up 25-22, the Bears won five of the next six points to even the match with a 30-23 victory. However, Delaware took control of the match, winning the final two games 30-23 and 30-16.
Senior libero Katie Lapinski (Niles, IL) led all players with 29 digs. Senior middle blocker Julie Mandolini-Trummel (Crystal Lake, IL) and junior right-side hitter Lillie Cohn (Seattle, WA) both had double-digit kills, recording 11 and 10, respectively. Mandolini-Trummel also recorded a team-high .381 attack percentage (11-3-21). Junior setter Natalie Meyers (Seal Beach, CA) had 41 assists.
The Bears continue competition at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday, taking on host Miami at 12:30 p.m. and ending with Loyola Chicago at 5 p.m.
