ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior Shirin Tooloee tallied a double-double on 23 digs and 12 kills, and classmate Melissa Cairo posted a team-high 28 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell at Cornell University, 3-2 (26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-27, 15-5), on Saturday evening at Newman Arena in its season finale.
The Bears (7-18, 2-12 Ivy) rallied from a 2-0 set deficit, taking back-to-back sets – including a win in extra points in set four – to tie the match at 2-2 and force a fifth frame before the host Big Red (12-11, 8-6 Ivy) claimed the decisive set.
Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) registered her fifth double-double of the season while Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) totaled 20 or more digs in a match for the sixth time this year.
Junior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) recorded a team-high 13 kills – her 11th double-figure kill match of the fall. Freshman Gabrielle Moriconi (Naples, Fla.) added nine kills and nine digs.
Freshman Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) compiled her first career double-double on 23 assists and 11 digs while fellow rookie Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.) dished out 20 assists with nine digs. Junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) came up with 16 digs.
Trailing 20-15 in set one, Brown scored six unanswered points to pull ahead 21-20. The two teams traded the next five points before Cornell took set point at 24-23. The Bears tied it at 24-24 prior to the Big Red emerging with a 26-24 win in overtime. Stillwell and Tooloee tallied five kills and seven digs respectively in the stanza.
In set two, Brown and Cornell remained level at 18-18 before the hosts used a 3-0 run to pull ahead 21-18 in an eventual 25-22 set win. In the period Tooloee and Moriconi each terminated on four kills while Cairo compiled 11 digs.
Brown began its comeback in set three – a frame in which neither side held a lead larger than three points. Facing a 19-17 deficit, the Bears tallied five straight points to pull ahead 22-19. The Big Red knotted the score at 23-23, but the visitors claimed a 25-23 win to extend the match.
The Bears staked themselves to a 21-17 edge in set four, but the Big Green used a 7-1 streak to gain set point at 24-22. Brown responded with a 5-1 run to take the set, 27-25, and push the match to a fifth frame. Tooloee and Cairo each made seven digs in the period.
The Big Red jumped out to a 10-1 advantage in the fifth set en route to earning a 15-5 win in the final frame.
For Cornell, Kit McCarty and Samanta Arenas tied for the match high with 15 kills, Zoe Chamness distributed a match-best 35 assists, and Kiley McPeek charted a match-high 32 digs.
Cornell swept the season series with Brown as the Big Red topped the Bears, 3-1, on October 6 in Providence, R.I.
