PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior libero Melissa Cairo recorded a career-high 34 digs, but Brown University volleyball fell to Dartmouth College, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21), on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
In a match that saw 33 total ties and 13 lead changes, the Bears (6-16, 1-10 Ivy) won the first set and eclipsed the 20-point plateau in each of the next three frames before dropping the decision to the visiting Big Green (8-12, 4-7 ivy).
Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) posted her second career match with 30 or more digs and tallied her fourth match this season with 20 or more digs.
Sophomore Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) totaled her third double-double of the season on 12 kills and a season-high 20 digs while freshman Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.) notched her second double-double of the year on 24 assists and 10 digs.
The two teams combined for 11 ties and three lead changes in set one before the Bears emerged with a 25-23 victory. After Dartmouth pushed ahead at 14-10, Brown rallied to tie the score at 16-16. Neither side held a lead larger than two points the rest of the way with Brown claiming three of the last four points to capture the set. Moriconi terminated on four kills in the stanza.
In set two, the Bears used five unanswered points to pull ahead 12-10 early in the frame. The Big Green worked its way back into the set, using a 4-0 run to grab a 19-18 edge. Brown remained within 23-22 prior to Dartmouth winning the period, 25-23. In the frame, Cairo came up with 11 digs while Ehlert and Moriconi each charted four kills.
Neither side held a lead larger than three points in set three until Dartmouth grabbed a 23-19 advantage in the waning moments of the frame on its way to a 25-21 set win. Ehlert and Cairo registered nine digs and seven digs respectively in the period.
In set four, the Big Green built a 20-14 lead behind a 6-1 run. The Bears trimmed the margin to 22-19 and 24-21, but the visitors held on in another 25-21 set win. Cairo posted 12 digs in the frame while Ehlert and Moriconi each notched four kills.
For Dartmouth, Malllen Bischoff landed a match-high 15 kills, Tori Dozier dished out a match-best 41 assists, and Lauren Douglas paced the Big Green with 20 digs. The Big Green swept the season series with the Bears after taking a 3-0 win in Hanover, N.H., on Oct. 14.
