PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Sabrina Stillwell tallied a match-high 14 kills, but Brown University volleyball fell to Yale University, the top team in the Ivy League standings, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-11), on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Beginning the second half of Ivy League play, the Bears (6-13, 1-7 Ivy) won the first set and pushed the visitors to the brink in set two before the Bulldogs (13-4, 7-1 Ivy) rallied to win sets two through four and maintain first place in the conference standings. Yale has now won nine of its last 10 matches.
Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) hit .270 and posted double-figure kills for the 10th time this season. Freshman Eliza Grover (Menlo Park, Calif.) supported her with nine kills on .318 hitting.
Senior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched a team-high 18 digs, senior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) registered 14 digs, and sophomore Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) contributed 12 digs and six kills.
Freshman setter Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.) led the Bears with 19 assists alongside eight digs while junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) added 13 assists and seven digs. Making her collegiate debut, freshman Tylin Stiller (Evergreen, Colo.) chipped in six kills.
Brown opened set one with an 11-6 lead and proceeded to extend the margin to 15-7. After Yale pulled within 16-13, the Bears used a 4-1 spurt to pull ahead 20-14 en route to a 25-20 set win. Stillwell paced the team with four kills in the period.
The visitors claimed an 11-7 edge early in set two before Brown worked the frame to a tie at 16-16. The Bears grabbed a 20-18 lead prior to a 5-1 run that gave Yale a 23-21 edge. The two teams traded the next four points as the Bulldogs won the frame, 25-23. Grover terminated on four kills in the stanza.
In set three, Yale staked itself to a 13-7 lead midway through the frame and closed the period on a 10-3 run in a 25-12 set win. Stillwell accounted for six kills on .312 hitting in the frame.
The Bulldogs claimed the final frame, 25-11, jumping out to a 10-2 lead and maintaining at least an eight-point edge the rest of the way. As a team, Yale hit .444 in set three and .440 in set four.
For Yale, Tristin Kott landed 11 kills, Kelsey Crawford finished with a double-double on 24 assists and 16 digs, libero Yurika Boyd came up with a match-high 27 digs, and Izzy Simqu made a match-best 10 blocks.
Next, Brown plays road matches at Penn (Oct. 27, 7:00 p.m.) and at Princeton (Oct. 28, 5:00 p.m.).
