Volleyball Takes First Set Before Falling at Harvard, 3-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Sabrina Stillwell tallied 13 kills, and sophomore Makena Ehlert notched her second double-double in as many matches, but Brown University volleyball fell at Harvard University, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-21), on Friday night at the Malkin Athletic Center.

The Bears (6-11, 1-5 Ivy) took the first set behind a late run before the host Crimson (10-5, 5-1 Ivy) claimed the next three frames, recording a .311 hitting percentage as a team in the match.

Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the team with her 13 kills and posted her ninth double-figure kills match this season. Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) totaled 10 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season. Senior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) added nine kills and five digs.

Senior Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) contributed a match-best 19 digs for her 11th match this season with 10 or more digs. At the setter spot, junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.), freshman Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.), and freshman Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) distributed 17, 12, and 10 assists respectively.

Brown took an early 8-4 lead in set one before Harvard went ahead 9-8 on a 5-0 run. Neither side held an edge larger than three points the rest of the way. The Crimson tied the set at 23-23 before the Bears won the last two points to take the frame, 25-23. Ehlert landed five kills in the stanza.

Harvard opened with a 14-9 advantage in set two and used a 6-0 run to pull ahead 23-13 on its way to a 25-14 set win. Ehlert terminated on four kills in the frame.

Neither team claimed a lead larger than three points in set three until the hosts used a 7-0 streak to capture a 19-10 advantage. Brown cut the margin to 23-19, but Harvard held on for a 25-20 set victory. Stillwell charted four kills in the period.

Brown and Harvard remained tied at 17-17 in set four prior to the Crimson notching a 5-1 burst to grab a 22-18 lead. The Bears sliced the margin to 23-21 before the hosts took the frame, 25-21. Stillwell compiled five kills in the stanza.

For Harvard, Christina Cornelius posted a double-double on 15 kills and 16 digs, Erin McCarthy dished out a match-high 47 assists, and Anna Hur came up with 18 digs.

Next, Brown completes the first half of Ivy League play at Dartmouth tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 14, at 5:00 p.m.
