NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Makena Ehlert tallied a team-high 10 kills, but Brown University volleyball fell at Yale, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-23), on Friday night at John J. Lee Amphitheater in the Ivy League opener for both teams.
Inside Payne Whitney Gymnasium, the Bears (5-7, 0-1 Ivy) nearly forced a fourth frame before the host Bulldogs (7-3, 1-0 Ivy) pulled out the win in straight sets.
Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) posted her first double-figure kills match of the season while senior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) and junior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) notched eight and six kills respectively with Stillwell hitting at a .400 rate.
Junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) dished out a team-best 16 assists, and freshman Emma Chow (Boulder, Colo.) added 12 assists. Freshman libero Joanne Won (Newport Beach, Calif.) registered a team-best nine digs.
Brown held a 19-13 lead in set one after a 5-0 run, but Yale cut the margin to 21-20 behind a 7-2 spurt. The Bears remained ahead at 22-20 before the Bulldogs won the set's last five points to take a 25-22 win. Tooloee terminated on four kills in the stanza.
In set two, the visitors held a 13-11 lead midway through the frame, but the hosts concluded the period on a 14-3 run to win the set 25-16.
Trailing 20-13 in set three, the Bears rattled off seven unanswered points to tie the frame at 20-20. Brown kept the score knotted at 21-21, but Yale held on for the 25-23 set victory. Ehlert notched five kills in the period.
For Yale, Kelley Wirth recorded a match-high 13 kills, and Kate Swanson led the match with 15 digs.
Next, Brown hosts Princeton on Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. and Penn on Sept. 30 at 5:00 p.m. with the contest against the Tigers serving as Brown's Spike ALS Match.
