PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – Diane Short, the head coach of the Brown volleyball team, has announced that rising senior Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, CA) will serve as the squad's captain for the 2013 season.
"Amanda is a leader by example on the volleyball court," said Short. "She is well-respected by her teammates and she communicates well with the coaching staff. Her consistent temperament and big picture outlook should help benefit team dynamics. Additionally, she is one of the most fearsome attackers in the league."
Nickel has been a steady contributor for the Bears throughout her first three years on College Hill, putting forth her most dominant performances during her junior year. As a freshman she appeared in 19 matches, playing 29 sets. She put up impressive numbers during her rookie campaign and was fifth on the team with 1.72 kills per set, sixth with a .145 hitting percentage and eighth with 50 kills. She improved during her sophomore season, playing 20 matches and 35 sets, and was a consistent force during her junior year, appearing in 19 matches and 56 sets. This past season she ranked second on the team in kills with 123, averaging 2.20 per set, and her .199 hitting percentage was also second-best for the Bears. Nickel was impressive in other areas of the game as well, ranking sixth on the team with 29 blocks.
