Brown Suffers Tough Loss at the Hands of Penn, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – In their last road contest of the 2012 season, the Brown women's volleyball team took an early lead, winning the first set, but were unable to carry the momentum as they fell to the Penn Quakers, 3-1. Tonight's loss drops the Bears to 6-16 (2-10) on the season, while Penn improves to 13-10 (8-4 Ivy League).

After Penn conducted their senior day ceremonies before the start of the match, the Bears attacked immediately, building off of Friday's impressive play to take the first set 25-21. A kill by junior Thea Derrough (La Jolla, CA) and a block sealed their initial victory. The early success of their opponents seemed to wake up the Quakers however, as they attacked at the start of the second set and never looked back, taking the next three, 25-16, 25-12 and 25-12.

As in last night's performance, there were some bright spots in the match for the Bears. Setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, CA) had 21 digs, while also contributing 28 assists for an impressive double-double. Reickhoff, a junior, currently leads the team in assists. Derrough had 10 kills on the night, while junior Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, CA) contributed six. Libero Kathryn Conner (Newport Beach, CA), currently leading the team in digs, added 17 to her total in tonight's game. Defensively the team had 11 total blocks, with sophomore Taylor Bantle (Pacific Palisades, CA) playing a hefty role. She had a match-high two solo blocks, as well as three block assists on the evening.

Penn proved a formidable opponent, with three different players ending the match with double-doubles. Kristen Ettterbeek had a match-high 20 kills as well as 17 digs, Alex Caldwell tallied 23 assists and 12 digs and Ronnie Bither added 32 assists and 12 digs. As a team, the Quakers hit .250 and had twelve total blocks.

Brown will return home to Providence next weekend to finish out their season, playing two matches in the Pizzitola. They take on the Dartmouth Big Green at 7:00pm on Friday, and then will conclude their season with senior day celebrations and a match against the Harvard Crimson at 5:00pm on Saturday.
