PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown volleyball team played its first Ivy League contest of the 2012 season while celebrating its "Dig Pink!" day, taking on the defending champs, Yale. The Bears got off to a slow start but took the Bulldogs to a 26-all tie in the second set. Bruno then won third before falling in another set that went past the 25-all mark. Yale improves to 5-5, 1-0 on the season while the Bears fall to 3-7, 0-1 in the 3-1 (15-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-27) contest.
Yale came out firing on all cylinders on their way to a 10-point win in the first game. Brown remained composed however, and took the Bulldogs best shots in set number two and fired right back.
Despite the close loss in the the second game, Brown used the momentum gained and powered through in set three, winning by five.
The two teams continued to battle in the final set, but with each squad at 25 points it was Yale who came away with the victory.
Junior outside hitter Amanda Nickel (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) posted a sterling performance with a match-high 15 kills, but it was not enough as four Bulldogs totaled double-digit kills. Nickel also had eight digs and two blocks in the match.
Brown also got a double-double in the match from junior setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) Rieckhoff totaled 25 assists and 11 digs to go along with three kills and a service ace.
Sophomore Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) tallied double-digit kills, putting away 13 balls. The outside hitter also tallied five digs, three blocks and a service ace.
