PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Playing in their 2011 home opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center, the Brown volleyball team downed Fordham 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21) in the second game of the Brown Invitational. Rookie outside hitter Maddie Lord (La Jolla, Calif.) led three players in double-digit kills, pacing the Bears with a match-high 20.
Lord started the match off hot, registering seven kills in the first set and added five digs to help Bruno to a 25-19 win. Sophomore setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) posted 15 of her match-high 58 assists in the first frame.
In the second, Brown got down early, but came back to take a 10-7 lead and force a Fordham timeout. The Bears continued to control the set as junior co-captain Katrina Post (Pasadena, Calif.) made her 2011 debut, picking up a kill that pushed the frame to match point.
Bruno opened up a 10-5 lead in the third and a thunderous kill from sophomore outside hitter Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) pushed the Rams to use a TO. Fordham rebounded and fought their way back into the set, breaking Brown's match point on their way to a 27-25 win.
It was a tighlty contested fourth set to start out, but it was Fordham, which jumped out to an early 16-12 lead. Head coach Diane Short wisely used a timeout, and the Bears responded using a 6-0 run to take the lead and ultimately the game, 25-21.
Pastore finished the match with 18 kills, while sophomore Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) also tallied double-digit kills with 13. Senior libero and co-captain Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) also returned from a two-game absence and totaled a match-high 20 digs.
The Bears will play two more matches in the Brown Invitational tomorrow afternoon, taking on Maryland-Eastern Shore at Noon prior to facing local rival Bryant at 7 p.m.
