PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown (6-12, 0-6) had three players with double-digit kills, but Cornell's (4-11, 2-4) Janel Forte and Erin McCarthy each had 16 kills as the Big Red topped the Bears 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 24-26, 18-25).
Freshmen Thea Derrough (LaJolla, Calif.) and Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Brown offense as each rookie finished with 13 kills. Sophomore Katrina Post (Pasadena, Calif.) tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Brown trailed by four early in the first set but used a 10-2 run to take control of the game. Derrough had four kills in the frame and a service ace by Post gave the Bears set point. A Big Red attack error gave the first game to Brown.
Cornell was able to regroup however and jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second set. They remained in control for much of the game and tied the match at one-all.
The two squads battled in the third game, knowing all the momentum was on the line. Brown was the first to reach set point, but a Cornell kill from Forte erased the advantage. The Big Red stepped up defensively, getting a two blocks from Madeleine Przybyl and Jordan Reeder to take the set 26-24.
Cornell came out strong in the fourth, forcing Brown to take an early timeout after four-straight points. The Bears were able close the deficit to two just one at the 7-6 mark, but that is as close as they would get. The Big Red used an 8-4 to pull away and eventually took the set for the 3-1 win.
Freshman setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) once again led the Bears with 41 assists and chipped in a kill, eight digs and three blocks. Junior libero Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) had a team-high 16 digs and also added a service ace.
The Bears hit the road this coming weekend as the team travels to take on Dartmouth on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. before facing Harvard on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.
