Providence, R.I. – Brown came out strong in the first home match of the 2010 season as impressive performances from three rookies led to a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-20) victory over Providence. Freshmen Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Thea Derrough (LaJolla, Calif.) paced the Bear attack as Rieckhoff tallied 32 assists while Pastore and Derrough had 10 and eight kills, respectively.
In the first set, both Pastore and senior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio) picked up four kills each as the Bears jumped out to an early 14-5 advantage and closed out the game on a 4-1 run.
Providence battled back in set number two and held control for much of the game as the Bears did not hold the lead until the final point. The Friars' Lauren Fletcher tallied six kills in the frame but she was countered by Derrough, who had six of her own. Sophomore Katrina Post (Pasadena, Calif.) put one away to tie the score at 24 all. The freshmen were back at it again when Derrough and Rieckhoff combined on a block to put the Bears into set point, befor Brown capitalized on a PC error to win game two.
The Bears held onto their momentum in game three jumping out to a 6-0 lead with junior Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.). Pastore tallied four more kills in the final frame while Post picked up her sixth of the match, which proved the winning point.
Gliottone led all players with 10 digs and tied with senior Danielle Vaughan (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) with three service aces.
Brown is back in action this weekend Sept. 10-11, at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament hosted by Towson and UMBC. In addition to the two host schools, the Bears will also face off against Ohio State.
