• Williamson Earns Fall Academic All-Ivy Honors

    The Ivy League released its fall list of Academic All-Ivy honorees, with 10 Brown student-athletes being recognized. The five males and five females were starters or key reserves on their respective varsity teams and carry a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average.

    Brown hit the road for its final two games of the 2010-11 season and took on Cornell Friday night. Senior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio) took advantage of her second-to-last game and posted a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs to help the Bears (9-16, 3-10) to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) win over the Big Red (4-19, 2-11).

    On senior night at the last home game of the 2010 volleyball season, the old and the new were on showcase. The Bears picked up their second Ivy League victory as the beat Dartmouth for the second time this season in four sets (23-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-17).

    Brown boasted five players with double-digit kills on Friday night at the Pizzitola Center but Harvard’s Taylor Docter was able to register 22 of her own to power the Crimson (8-15, 5-6) past the Bears (7-16, 1-10) in five sets (20-25, 16-25, 25-19, 25-21, 13-15).

    Senior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been selected to the ESPN Academic All-District Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Williamson boasts a 3.93 GPA with a concentration in development studies.

    Freshman Thea Derrough (LaJolla, Calif.) tied a season-high with 13 kills, but two Princeton (12-8, 7-2) players tallied 15 kills each to power the Tigers past Brown (7-15, 1-9) in three sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-18).

    Freshman Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) tallied a game-high 11 kills, but it was not enough as Ivy League-leading Penn (11-9, 7-1) topped the Bears (7-14, 1-8) in three sets (12-25, 28-30, 23-25).

    Brown (7-13, 1-7), which one its first league game last night, fought to make it two in a row at Harvard (6-14, 3-5), but fell in four sets against the Crimson (24-26, 25-22, 17-25, 13-25). Freshman Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the Bears with 12 kills.

    Brown (7-12, 1-6) picked up its first Ivy League victory of the year at Dartmouth (12-6, 3-4) on Friday night on the strength of a game-high 17 kills from senior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio). Williamson finished the match with a double-double, registering 10 digs while also chipping in four assist, and three blocks in the 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 26-24) victory.

    Brown (6-12, 0-6) had three players with double-digit kills, but Cornell’s (4-11, 2-4) Janel Forte and Erin McCarthy each had 16 kills as the Big Red topped the Bears 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 24-26, 18-25).

    The Brown volleyball team went back-and-forth with Columbia Friday night at the Pizzitola Center as both teams battled to the 17th point of the fifth set. The Lions (11-5, 3-2) ended up on top however, as they edged out the Bears (6-11, 0-5) with one final kill, 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 17-15).

    Brown (6-10, 0-4) was tripped up in a defensive battle at Penn (6-9, 2-1) on Saturday night as a season-high 16 team blocks was not enough as the Quakers prevailed 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 16-25, 22-25). Freshman Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) totaled a match-high 15 kills and has posted three-straight contests with at least 15 kills.

    Yale (7-5, 1-0) and reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week Kendall Polan came out strong and played fast against Brown (6-7, 0-1) in the conference opener for both teams, as the Bulldogs topped the Bears 3-0 (20-25, 24-26, 18-25). Polan racked up a double-double with 23 assists and 17 digs while Ivy League Player of the Week Kathryn Glickman (San Francisco, Calif.) helped lead the charge for Brown with six kills and three blocks.

    For the second week in a row, a top Ivy League weekly honor comes from Brown. Sophomore Kathryn Glickman (San Francisco, Calif.) had a breakout match on Sept. 25 against Stony Brook, coming off the bench to tally a team-high 14 kills and 10 blocks and lead the Bears to a come-from-behind 3-2 win. For her efforts she was named the Player of the Week as announced by the conference office today.

    Brown (5-6) completed a whirlwind schedule of four games in two days at the Brown Invitational on Saturday. The Bears downed Central Connecticut State 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-23), before being topped by Boston College in the final game of the tournament, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-20). Freshman setter Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and junior libero Annika Gliottone (Warwick, R.I.) were named to the All-Tournament Team.

    Brown (4-5) played back-to-back games on the first day of the Brown Invitational at the Pizzitola Center and went 1-1, picking up a straight sets victory over Holy Cross (5-9) and losing a close battle with Rhode Island (7-3) in five games. On the day, senior Brianna Williamson (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the team with 26 kills and freshman Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.) totaled 77 assists.

    In the final game of the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament, Brown (3-4) was edged in a highly contested match 3-1 (27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 23-25) by host UMBC (4-4). The Bears were able to take the first set after facing match point for the Retrievers but were topped in the next three, all coming by four points or less.

    In the first match of the Madison Bingham Memorial Tournament hosted by UMBC and Towson, Brown (2-3) met perennial volleyball powerhouse Ohio State (6-1) and was topped 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-18). The Buckeyes came out strong in the first set, but the Bears battled back, narrowly dropping the next two sets.

    After losing the first set of the match, Brown (3-3) regrouped to take the next three sets and win 3-1 (17-25, 25-29, 25-22, 26-24) against Towson (10-2) in the team’s second game of the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament to hand the Tigers just their second loss of the season.

    Brown came out strong in the first home match of the 2010 season as impressive performances from three rookies led to a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-20) victory over Providence. Freshmen Alexandra Rieckhoff (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Emma Pastore (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Thea Derrough (LaJolla, Calif.) paced the Bear attack as Rieckhoff tallied 32 assists while Pastore and Derrough had 10 and eight kills, respectively.

    The Brown volleyball team earned its first win of the 2010 season, taking a 3-0 victory over Hartford at the UConn Toyota Classic. Brown (1-2) took the hard-fought match with a 29-27 win in the first game, 25-21 in game two, and 25-18 in game three.
