Providence, RI – Head volleyball coach Diane Short recently announced that middle back Danielle Vaughan '11 (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and setter Spencer McAndrews '12 (Los Angeles, CA) will serve as the captains for the 2010 Brown squad. The duo will lead the Bears through a difficult schedule this fall, and will look to return Brown to the top of the Ivy League.
“We are looking forward to this upcoming season under the leadership of our captains,” said assistant coach Scott Blanchard. “Danielle Vaughan, returning for her second year as captain, and Spencer McAndrews in her first season, both complement each other, and will work very well together. They will provide excellent leadership, and guide the team as we get ready for a great season.”
Vaughan, who served as a captain last season, was one of just two players to participate in all 25 matches for Brown last season, starting in 24 of them. The rising senior led the Bears in attack percentage at 2.08, while finishing third on the squad with 131 total kills, good for an average of 1.44 per set. Vaughan was also an integral part of Brown's defense, leading the team in solo, assisted, and total blocks by a wide margin, finishing with 72 overall blocks.
McAndrews has played several positions with great success for the Bears, but spent the majority of 2009 as the team's setter, playing in 23 of 25 matches. The rising junior led the team by a wide margin in total assists and assists per set, coming in at 465 and 5.89 respectively. McAndrews also had 71 digs, an impressive total for a setter, and finished second on the squad in total blocks, wracking up 47, including five solo rejections.
The Bears will open the 2010 season on September 3 at the UConn Invitational, where they will play UConn, Southern Illinois, and Hartford.
