Cushing Named Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year By RIAIAW

The Rhode Island Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) has named Brown junior Kate Cushing (Cranston, RI) a Distinguished Student-Athlete of the Year. She was presented the award at a reception held at Brown's Pizzitola Memorial Sports Center on Wed. May 7.

Cushing, a member of the women's indoor and outdoor track team, was part of the 4x800 meter relay squad that set a new school record this season at the Penn Relays on Apr. 26. She finished second in the 800 meters at the New England Championships during the indoor season with a season best time of 2:15.75. Cushing has established herself as one of Brown's all-time best middle distance athletes, ranking in the top ten of seven events in Brown track history.

Concentrating in Educational Studies, Cushing served an internship with the Rhode Island State Education Department this past summer. She also organized a tutoring program to help inner city students prepare for the SATs.
