Women's Track & Field Opens Indoor Season with Alden Invitational

Providence, RI - The Brown women's track & field team opened up its 2008-09 indoor season with the Vern Alden Invitational this afternoon. Sophomore Rachel Biblo (Thiensville, WI) earned two first-place finishes for the squad today, taking home the triple jump title as well as the long jump title. Freshman Brianna Rogers (Moorestown, NJ) also finished well for the Bears, bringing home a title in the 3,000-meter run.
In the triple jump, Biblo's leap of 38-02 was the best of the bunch to earn first, while UConn's Ellen Powers secured second place with a 36-05.50. Brown freshman Shannon Stone (Condon, MT) turned in a solid 34-09.50 for fourth place, while freshman Jara Crear (New Orleans, LA) placed fifth with a 34-03.50.
Sophomore Brynn Smith (Saco, ME) was Brown's top finisher in the weight throw, with a 52-09.25 for third place. Unattached Jasmine Jennings came in first (62-08.75), while UConn's Tynisha McMillian secured second with a 56-04.50. Senior Molly Hawksley (Rumford, RI) placed sixth (48-07.25) and rookie Lissa Mazanec (Colby, KS) tossed a 41-09.25 for ninth.
Smith garnered the long jump title with a 17-03.50, as Crear placed fourth with a leap of 15-09.75. Sophomore Natasha Smith (Gloucester, MA) finished in ninth for Brown with a 14-07.25.
In the pole vault, junior Cassandra Wong (Ridgewood, NJ) tied for second place with a 10-11.75 and sophomore Grace Watson (Belmont, MA) earned third place in the high jump with her 5-04.00 to lead Brown in the event. Finishing in eighth place was sophomore Anna Cook (Burlington, NJ) with a 4-10.00.
In the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Susan Scavone finished in second with an 8.40, just three seconds behind first-place finisher Lhayana Dallas of UConn. Turning in strong performances in the one mile run this afternoon was Bridgett Black (Hanover, NH) with a 5:16.14 for third, while Emily Mepham came in fifth place with a 5:34.11.
Sophomore Lucy Higgins was Brown's top finisher in the 500m dash, turning in a time of 1:18.07 for second. Holy Cross's Lauren Courtney earned the title in the event with a 1:18.03, and UConn's Vicki Weismann took third place with her 1:18.16. In fifth place was Brown's Natasha Smith with a 1:19.56, as Amanda Filiberto (Northport, NY) finished in 16th with a 1:26.71.
Brown secured the top two spots in the 3,000m run, as Rogers earned first place with her 10:43.84, followed by freshman Amanda Hermann's (Skillman, NJ) 10:44.00 for second place. In fourth was Megan Fitzpatrick (Hopewell Valley, NJ) with a 10:48.66, and in seventh was Rachel Baker with an 11:08.26. In the 4x400 relay, UConn's "A" placed first with a 3:54.84 as Brown "A" finished right behind with a 3:56.87 for second.
