Providence, RI - The women's track and field team opened its indoor season at home with the annual Alden Invitational today. The Bears' had three first-place finishes by sophomore Thelma Breezeatl (Manassas, VA) in the 55-meter dash, Samantha Adelberg (Washington, DC) in the 1,000m run, and freshman Natasha Smith (Gloucester, MA) in the high jump.
In the 55m dash, Breezeatl breezed to first place with a 7.07, as UConn's Monique Hodges took second with a 7.08. Brown senior Akilah King (Medford, MA) came in third with a 7.21.
King was Brown's top finisher in the 200m dash, as she placed third with a 25.21. Sophomore Shannon Stone (Mont Vernon, NH) came in 15th (27.69) and junior Dianna Anderson in 16th with a 27.95. UConn claimed both first and second place finishes, as Phylicia George featured a 24.98 and Mandela Graves-Fulghoum placed second with a 25.10.
Brown's Lucy Higgins (Jeffersonville, VT) showed promise in the 400m dash, taking fourth place with a 1:00.24. Freshman Natasha Smith (Gloucester, MA) was Brown's top finisher in the 500m with a 1:20.33 for sixth place, as freshman Amanda Filiberto (Northport, NY) finished with a 1:23.92 for 11th.
In the one mile run, freshman Caroline Scanlan turned in Brown's best performance with a 5:20.36 for second place behind UConn's Leah Andrianos (5:12.25). Sophomore Laura Armstrong (Louisville, KY) placed eighth with a 5:29.62.
Adelberg finished the 1,000m run in 2:59.37 for first place, as freshman Whitney Sparks (Bronxville, NY) was Brown's next finisher in seventh with a 3:09.71. Anderson tallied a third-place finish in the 55m hurdles with an 8.33, and Smith took the title in the high jump at five feet six inches. Rounding out the scorers in the high jump was freshman Anna Cook (Burlington, NJ) with a 5-04.25, and Anja Hegrueter (Newton, MA) at 5-02.25.
Brown's top pole vaulters were junior Kristen Olds (Painesville, OH) and senior Tiffany Chang (Lafayette, CA) with an 11-05.75 for second place finishes, followed by Keely Marsh (Annandale, NJ) for fourth with a 10-11.75.
Long jump was owned by freshman Rachel Biblo (Thiensville, WI) who placed second with a 17-01.25, and Brooke Staton (Owings Mills, MD) in fourth with a 17-00. King's second place finish (39-08) in the triple jump was Brown's top finish as Stone came in fourth (36-07). Bruno's top shot putter was sophomore Danielle Grunlog (Effingham, IL) with a 44-07.50 for third, and freshman Brynn Smith (Sace ME) in fourth with a 43-06.
Junior Molly Hawksley (Rumford, RI) finished fifth in the weight throw (46-00.50) and Smith was 11th with a 41-04.50. Brown also earned a second place finish in the 1,600m relay with a 3:59.02.
