Women Harriers Take Top Spot at UMass Dartmouth Invitational

Sept. 18, 2004

North Dartmouth, MA -- The women's cross country team competed at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, September 18. Brown placed first out of 33 teams, beating out second place Amherst College by 36 points.

Sophomore Naja Ferjan (Ljubljan, Slovenia) took the top spot overall with a time of 18:21 on the 5000m course. Ferjan beat her closest competitor by 13 seconds. Junior Annie Hatch (Tacoma, WA) came in next for the Bears, in third place, with a time of 18:35 in her first meet of the season. Senior captain Julie Komosinski (San Diego, CA) was sixth (18:48). Junior Jilane Rodgers (Brea, CA) and senior Emma Sarro (Chatham, NY) rounded out the Bears' top 5, coming in seventh and tenth places, respectively (18:54, 18:59). Not far behind in 14th and 15th places were freshmen Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK) (19:05), and Becky Crossin (Annandale, NJ) (19:10). Sophomore Michol Monaghan (Uniontown, PA) finished in 17th place with a time of 19:18, also in her first meet of the season. The times are impressive due to the steady rain throughout the morning that had flooded the course. The rain continued during the race, as well.

Brown got off to a quick start so they would not get caught behind slower runners, as the course narrowed after only 200m. Brown ran as a pack for the first 1.75 miles, and even though the pack began to split up over the last mile, it was already clear that the Bears were going to win.

The Bears will look to build upon this strong performance when they return to action at the Murray Keating Invitational on October 2, hosted by the University of Maine.
