Brynn Smith '11 Named Women's Athlete of the Meet at Ivy League Heptagonal Championships

Philadelphia, PA - The Brown women's track & field team finished in fifth place overall at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships hosted at the University of Pennsylvania this weekend. Brown was led by sophomore Brynn Smith (Saco, ME), who put forth an outstanding effort to win both the shot put and hammer throw titles to be named the women's athlete of the meet. With her toss, Smith became just the third woman to throw 50 feet at Heps, measuring 15.29 meters (50-2) in the shot put, as her 56.23m landed her first in the hammer throw as well.
The young Bears' squad was without standout veterans Nicole Burns (Newburgh, NY) and Thelma Breezeatl (Manassas, VA), but still turned in a respectable fifth place finish with a total of 69 points. Earning the title was Princeton (153), followed by Cornell (146), Columbia (107) and Harvard (87). Dartmouth (64), Penn (57) and Yale (30) claimed the sixth, seven and eight spots, respectively.
Brown was at its best in the field events, as Smith took home two titles. Junior Danielle Grunloh followed right behind Smith in both the shot put with a throw of 15.10m (49-6.5) for second, and also placed second in the discus with a mark of 48.59m (159-5). Shannon Stone (Mont Vernon, NH) earned sixth in the triple jump with an 11.95, and sophomore Rachel Biblo (Thiensville, WI) came in 11th with an 11.49m leap. Biblo also earned ninth place in the long jump with a 5.44m mark. In the hammer throw, senior Molly Hawskley finished with a fourth place throw of 49.08m (161-0) and junior Katie Wood (St. Joseph, MO) picked up a seventh place finish in the javelin with a 35.24m (115-7).
Junior Anja Hergrueter (Newton, MA) had a great third place finish in the high jump with a 1.70m (5-7), as sophomore Grace Watson (Belmont, MA) followed behind in 10th with 1.59 (5-2.5). Junior Cassandra Wong (Ridgewood, NJ) took seventh in the pole vault (3.55m), and
In the running events, Brown's 4x800m relay finished in first place with an 8:49.29, defeating second place Columbia (8:53.28) and Cornell (8:56.50) in the eight-team field.
Kesley Ramsey (Franklin Lakes, NJ) garnered fourth place in the 1,500m run with a 4:30.87, and junior Ariel Wright (Oakland, CA) finished in sixth in the 3,000m run with a time of 10:00.63. Wright also followed up with a fifth place time of 17:04.43 in the 5,000m run. Sophomore Lauren Pischel (La Jolla, CA) earned sixth in the 10,000m run with a solid time of 37:30.50, and also took 12th in the 5,000m run with an 18:02.76.
