New York, NY-- After Day 1 at the Heptagonal Championships in New York, Brown is trailing first-place Cornell by only one point. The competitors have faced rainy, windy weather for the first day of the meet, with a slight respite later in the day. Many of the field events are now complete, while the finals of most of the running events will be held tomorrow.
On the field, senior Ashley Wall (Ellicott City, MD) placed second in the long jump with a leap of 18'8.5". Freshman Tiffany Chang (Lafeyette, CA) placed third in the pole vault (11'11.75"). Sophomore Laura Dudek (West Warren, MA) placed second in the javelin (134'4"). Senior Jennifer Donahue (Winter Park, FL) placed fifth in the hammer throw (155'7").
Freshman Akilah King (Medford, MA) has qualified for the finals in the 200m (25.34). Senior co-captain Kelly Powell (Patchogue, NY) qualified for the finals in the 800m with her time of 2:13.29. Sophomore Naja Ferjan (Ljubljana, Slovenia) qualified for the finals in the 1500m by winning her heat in 4:31.45. Senior Fara Kitton (Bellmore, NY) has qualified for the finals in the 100mH (14.39). Also qualifying in the hurdles (400mH) is junior Emily Lewis-LaMonica (1:03.16).
Competition restarts tomorrow at 11:00am with the women's shot put. The first running event will be the women's 5000m at 11:45am.
