Storrs, CT-- The women's track and field team traveled to Storrs, CT today to compete at the University of Connecticut Invitational. Rainy, humid weather plagued the teams in Storrs, but the Bears persevered and took second out of nine teams. Brown captured the top two spots in the 800m, and also gathered wins in the shot put, javelin, and pole vault.
In the sprints, senior Jaylon White (Minneapolis, MN) took third in both the 100m and 200m. Freshman Akilah King (Medford, MA) placed second in the 200m with a time of 25.33. Sophomore Cheryl Scott (Atco, NJ) had a breakthrough performance in the 400m, and captured second with a time of 57.72. Junior co-captain Kelly Powell (Patchogue, NY) was fifth (58.18). Senior Fara Kitton (Bellmore, NY) placed third in the 100mH. The 4x100m relay team took second with a time of 47.8.
Brown had three scorers in the 800m. Junior Anna Willard (Greenwood, ME) won in 2:14.11, followed by senior Julie Komosinski (San Diego, CA) in 2:17.70. Freshman Becky Crossin (Annandale, NJ) was sixth. In the 5000m, freshman Alex Brown (Kingston, NY) placed fourth (18:04.75).
Brown also had three scorers in the pole vault. Junior Janea Russ (El Cajon, CA) won with a leap of 3.66m/12'. Freshman Tiffany Chang (Lafeyette, CA) was third, also at 3.66m/12'. Sophomore Allison Brager (Youngstown, OH) placed fifth (3.35m/10'11.75").
Senior Ashley Wall (Ellicott City, MD) placed second in the high jump (1.65m/5'5"). Junior Erin Meschter (Danville, PA) was fourth (1.6m/5'3"). Wall also placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.66m/18'7". Dominique Bosa-Edwards (Las Vegas, NV) took fourth in the triple jump (11.72m/38'5.5").
In the throws, senior co-captain Jill Lynch (Racine, WI) won the shot put with a put of 13.02m/42'8.75". Another win came from sophomore Laura Dudek (West Warren, MA) in the javelin with a throw of 36.62m/120'2". Freshman Sarah Groothuis (Aurora, NE) placed second in the discus (38.7m/127'), while Lynch took third (38.67m/126'10"). Senior Jennifer Donahue (Winter Park, FL) placed second in the hammer throw (47.01m/154'3").
The team returns to competition next weekend at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The meet begins on April 28. For athletes not traveling to Pennsylvania, Brown is hosting the Brown Springtime Invitational on May 1.
