Women's Track & Field Earns First at Brown Invitational

Providence, RI - The Brown women's track & field team had an outstanding showing during its first home meet of the 2008 campaign, the Brown Invitational. The Bears featured seven individuals earning titles in their respective events, while two relay teams earned firsts as well en route to finishing in first place overall with 167.50 points. Finishing behind Bruno was Dartmouth (142), Rhode Island (92), Harvard (90), University of Birmingham (32), Southern Connecticut State (27.50) and Columbia (4).

Senior Akilah King (Medford, MA) turned in a solid 12.16 in the 100-meter dash to win the event, as junior Nicole Burns (Newburg, NY) won the 200-meter with a 24.56. Brown also had great finishes from freshman Lucy Higgins (Jeffersonville, VT), who secured fifth place in the 200-meter (26.10), and junior Dianna Anderson (Verona, NJ) finished with a 27.26. Anderson also had a great finish in the 100-meter hurdles, earning second place with a 14.91.

Freshman Samantha Adelberg (Washington, DC) earned the 800-meter title, crossing the line at 2:09.25, as freshman Kesley Ramsey (Franklin Lakes, NJ) turned in a 2:15.02 for fourth. Brown had stellar finishes in the one mile run, as Brown claimed first, second, fourth and sixth place finishes. Sophomore Jenna Ridgway (Santa Barbara, CA) earned the one-mile title with a 4:45.50, followed by Ramsey in second (4:57.62). Freshman Caitlin Clark (Granite Bay, CA) earned fourth (4:59.64) and senior Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK) took sixth with a 5:02.24. Brown's 4x100 (48.65) relay team and 4x400 (3:52.19) relay both finished in first place as well.

Freshman Grace Watson (Belmont, MA) turned in a 5-05.00 in the high jump to place first. Other great finishes in the field events for Bruno was Tiffany Chang (Lafayette, CA) in the pole vault, taking second place with an 11-11.75, Rachel Biblo (Thiensville, WI) with a third-place finish in the long jump (18-01.50), and Shannon Stone (Mont Vernon, NH) with a 35-08.00 in the triple jump to earn third place. Freshman Brynn Smith (Sace, ME) took the shot put (44-04.75), as well as Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, IL) in the discus throw (145-06)

The Bears will not compete in the UConn Select Invitational on Saturday, April 19, and then head to the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 24.
