Battling fierce weather conditions, the Bears fielded a full squad at the University of Connecticut Invitational on Saturday. Though sleet, rain and snow fell throughout the day, it was the first time Bruno raced a full roster this outdoor season. Brown took second place with 110 points, trailing the host Huskies' 288, but outpacing in-state rivals URI (78) and Providence College (33).

Frosh Lindsay Kahn (Port Jefferson, NY) kicked off the day for Brown with a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. It marked the rookie's first collegiate outdoor race, and her time of 10:52 ranks her second all-time for Brown. The mark is an ECAC qualifier, and only one second off of a NCAA Regional berth.

Another victory came from junior Laura Dudek (West Warren, MA) in the javelin, as she hit 136-11 in the downpour. In the sprints, sophomore Akilah King (Medford, MA) took third in the 200-meter dash, clocking 24.74 in the wet conditions. Right alongside King was frosh Nicole Burns (Newburgh, NY) in fourth at 24.75.

Junior Lauren Hale (Warren, RI) scored in the 200-meters as well (15.63 for seventh) and in the 100 dash taking seventh in 12.51.

Junior Cheryl Scott (Acto, NJ), who has a knack for hitting fast times in the rain, placed in the 400-meter dash at 59.38. Frosh Dianna Anderson (Verona, NJ) competed for the first time in the 400-meter hurdles, taking fifth.

The middle distance team racked up the points in the 800, taking second, third, fourth, and sixth places. Junior Naja Ferjan (Ljubljana, Slovenia), senior captain Kelly Powell (East Patchogue, NY), sophomore Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK) and frosh Kat D'Auria (Norwich, CT) completed the two-lap event despite severe hail. Ferjan led the group with 2:11.48.

The 4x400-meter relay came down to the final steps as the host Huskies out-leaned the Bears. Brown took second in 3:51.14.

Four Bears scored in the pole vault, contested indoors due to the elements, As junior Keely Marsh (Annandale, NJ) and Tiffany Chang (Lafayette, CA) cleared 11-5.75, good for fifth and sixth. Junior Allison Brager (Youngstown, OH) and frosh Kristen Olds (Painesville, OH) also scored, taking seventh and eighth. Erin Meschter (Danville, PA) took fourth in the high jump, which was also moved to the indoor field house.

A slew of freshmen racked up the field events points, braving the mother nature in the process. Julia Chiang (Piedmont, CA) jumped outdoors, taking fourth in the long jump at 17-04.75 despite a flooded runway and pit. Katherine Harty (Ellington, CT) did the same, taking third in the triple at 34-1.5. Samantha Kuo (San Mateo, CA) placed seventh in the shot put (36-9.5) in the conditions, Molly Hawksley (Rumford, RI) was fifth in the hammer (140-7) and Ali Mumford (Gresham, OR) took fifth in the javelin (114-8).

The Bears return to action at home on Saturday as they host the Brown Invitational at the Brown Stadium.
