The track and field squad traveled to Storrs, CT Saturday to compete in the annual UCONN Alumni Outdoor Invitational. The team finished second in a field of eight teams, falling only to UCONN. Junior Smita Gupta (Tulsa, OK) and senior Naja Ferjan (Ljubljana, Slovenia) each logged wins in their respective events, while others used the meet as an opportunity for training, competing in multiple events each.
Ferjan won the 800 meter run in 2:12.06, and was followed by Gupta in second in 2:18.99. The Bears earned a total of 25 points in the 800 meter run alone, with five Brown athletes competing in the event. Gupta won the 1500 meter run in 4:41.59, and was followed by freshman Brooke Giuffre (Carlsbad, CA) in 4:43.99.
Junior Akilah King (Medford, MA) placed third in the 100 meter dash with a 11.99 run, with senior Lauren Hale (Warren, RI) in eighth in 12.44. Hale also placed seventh in the 200 meter dash in 26.02. Freshman Jasmine Chukwueke (San Diego, CA) placed fifth in the 400 meter in 58.92, followed by senior Cheryl Scott (Atco, NJ) in sixth in 59.27.
The `A' 4x1600 meter relay team won the race with a 3:51.11 effort.
In the jumps, junior Tiffany Chang (Lafayette, CA) placed second with a 11-05.75 jump. Freshman Cassandra Wong (Ridgewood, NJ) followed in third with a 10-11.75 effort. Scott came back from the 400 to place fourth in the long jump with a 17-04.00 jump. Freshman Shannon Stone (Mount Vernon, NH) placed fifth in 16-04.5. King placed third in the triple jump with a 37-06.75 jump, followed by senior Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) in fourth in 35-06.00, and Stone in fifth in 35-03.75.
In the throws freshman Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, IL) placed fourth in the discus (134-02) and fifth in the shot put (40-10.5). Freshman Jenna Silver (Elmhurst, IL) placed sixth in the shot put with a 41-06.25 throw. Sophomore Molly Hawksley (Rumford, RI) placed fourth in the hammer throw in 153-07.5, followed by sophomore Samantha Kuo (San Mateo, CA) in fifth in 146.09. Sophomore Ali Mumford (Gresham, OR) placed fifth in the javelin with her 124-11 throw.
The Bears will compete next at their 2007 outdoor home opener, the Brown Invitational on Saturday, April 14.
