Track and Field Kickoff Spring Competition at Northeastern

The women's track and field program opened their spring season this weekend at the Husky Spring Open, hosted by Northeastern University. The meet was highlighted by numerous impressive performances including two first place finishes by junior Akilah King (Medford, MA) in the 200m and triple jump. A number of athletes sat this meet out to prepare for the upcoming Stanford Invitational.
King finished first in the 200 meter run with a time of 25.15, with freshman Thelma Breezeatl (Manassas, VA) close behind in second place in 25.43. Senior Lauren Hale (Warren, RI) placed third in the 100 meter dash in 12.51. Freshman Jasmine Chukwueke (San Diego, CA) placed second in the 400 meter run in 58.42, with senior Cheryl Scott (Atco, NJ) in fourth in 59.35.
Senior Madeleine Marecki (Morris, CT) placed second in the 5,000 meter with a time of 18:23.57. Marecki improved on her previous best time by 18 seconds. Junior Hannah Nichols (Hinesburg, VT) placed fifth in the 1500 meter run also running a personal best, with a time of 4:54.07.
The 4x1600 meter relay came in second place with a time of 4:00.19. The team was made up of King, Scott, Chukwueke, and sophomore Nicole Burns (Newburgh, NY).
In the field, King also earned a win in the triple jump with a 37-04.50 jump. Freshman Rikki Baldwin (Magnolia, TX) placed second in the event in 35-08.5, followed by classmate Shannon Stone (Mount Vernon, NH) in 34-09.00. Baldwin also placed sixth in the long jump with a 16-08.75 leap. Sophomore Kristen Olds (Painesville, OH) placed fourth in the pole vault with her 10-11.75 jump.
Freshman Danielle Grunloh (Effingham, IL) placed second in the discus with a 131-03 throw, followed by classmate Alex Hartley (Spring, TX) in sixth with a 119.04 throw. Grunloh also placed fourth in the shot put with a 39-08.00, followed by freshman Jenna Silver (Elmhurst, IL) in fifth with a 38-09.75, and Hartley in sixth in 37-08.75. Sophomore Samantha Kuo (San Mateo, CA) placed fifth in the hammer throw with her 138-04 throw.
The Bears will next compete at the Stanford Invitational on March 30 and 31 in Palo Alto, California as a part of their annual spring break training trip.
