Ivy Championship Central

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown University track & field teams will compete in the Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Championships this Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11, at Cuyler Field & Dwyer Track on the campus of Yale University. Events are scheduled to start on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The men's team finished third at last year's Ivy Championship and will look to build on that success this time around. Brown starts with the talented duo of senior Evan Weinstock (Las Vegas, Nev.) and junior Peter Rhodes (Atlanta, Ga.) in the decathlon. Weinstock, who will look for his third title in the event after winning as a freshman and last year as a junior, currently ranks first in the league and 27th overall in the nation. Rhodes ranks third in the league this season and captured the heptathlon title at the league indoor championships during the winter.

On the track, the Bears will turn to senior Ajani Brown (Frisco, Texas) and sophomore Ryan Kelly (Greenwich, Conn.) in the sprints as well as the relays.

The Bears feature a strong group of throwers, led by junior Courtland Clavette (Asheville, N.C.), who ranks third in the discus after a school record-breaking performance at the Raleigh Relays. Brown will also count on solid performances from freshmen Taylor Alarcon (Wilmette, Ill.) in the triple jump, rookie Mark Buda (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the javelin and sophomore Matthew O'Hara (Riverside, Calif.) in the hammer.

The women's side placed sixth at the 2013 Heptagonal Championships and will rely on several standout performers this season. Senior Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, Mich.) is in the middle of an impressive spring as she enters the weekend ranked first in both the shot put and discus, while teammate Kebbeh Darpolor (Pecos, Texas) owns the third-best mark in the discus this season. Junior Heather Vermillion (Visalia, Calif.) and freshman Ellie Gravitte (Ridgefield, Conn.) will look to put up some points in the hammer throw and javelin, respectively.

Also in the field, senior Brienna Crimmins (Sacramento, Calif.) is tied for the top mark in the long jump after a leap of 19-03.50 at the Raleigh Relays, while sophomore Uzoamaka Okoro (Darien, Ill.) is ranked fourth in the triple jump and claimed first place in the event at Yale's Mark Young Invite with a leap of 39-01.75. Sophomore Morayo Akande (Robinson, Ill.) is expected to compete for the top spot in the high jump after winning the indoor league title in March.

On the track, senior Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, N.H.) leads the distance group with a top-10 ranking in three events and most recently broke the school record in the 3,000 meters at the Penn Relays. Brown will also look to sophomore Emmaline Suchland (Seattle, Wash.) in the sprints and junior Alex Stanton (Medfield, Mass.) in the 400-meter hurdles.
