KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND – Brown's women's track and field team competed at the URI Track and Field Coaches Tribute Invitational in Kingston, Rhode Island on Saturday. The competition was held in URI's Mackal Fieldhouse, and included athletes from Providence College, Bryant, Rhode Island, UNH, Fordham and several other schools. Brown scored 60 points overall to earn fifth place in the team scoring.
Highlighting the throwing events were senior co-captain Lacey Craker (Baraboo, WI) and freshman Josephine Darpolor (Pecos, TX) who went one-two in the weight throw. Craker claimed a victory with a toss of 17.71m, and Darpolar's 16.28m throw took the runner-up spot. In the shot put, Victoria Buhr (Cheboygan, MI) placed fourth with a 12.83m throw, and sophomore Heather Vermillion (Visalia, CA) threw for a mark of 11.57m to take ninth.
Senior Hannah Wallace (Whitefish Bay, WI) added an individual win on the jumps side by clearing 3.55m in the pole vault to claim first among the competition. Another top finish came from freshman OSha Williams (New York, NY) in the triple jump. Williams' mark of 11.14m earned third place, and teammate Uzoamaka Okoro (Darien, IL) took sixth with a leap of 10.51m. Jocelyn West (Fort Mohave, AZ) and Morayo Akande (Robinson, IL) represented the Bears in the high jump. West took ninth place, clearing 1.60m, and Akande placed 12th with a 1.55m jump.
Elaine Kuckertz (Clarendon Hills, IL) led the way in the running events with a win in the 1000m after crossing in 2:57. Several women competed in the 1-mile run, and Victoria O'Neil (Boise, ID) was the Bears' top finisher in seventh place with a time of 5:16, followed by Abigail Braiman (Horseheads, NY) who ran to 15th with a time of 5:21. Freshman Amara Berry added team points in the 200m dash by sprinting to sixth place in 26.59s.
Brown takes on top regional competition next weekend in Boston, when it competes at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on February 8 and 9.
