Jacksonville, Fla. – After competing at the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., Brown University's Olivia Mickle (Sacramento, CA), Dan Lowry (Plymouth Meeting, PA) and Erik Berg (Seattle, WA) qualified for the NCAA Championships hosted at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa June 6-9.
"We're really excited for Olivia (Mickle) qualifying to the NCAA Finals in two weeks," said Director of Track & Field Michelle Eisenreich. "We're also ecstatic to be sending Erik and Dan as well."
Mickle qualified to Drake on the first day of competition when she finished in ninth place in the 10,000m run with a 34:30.12.
"I was really impressed with how confidently Olivia (Mickle) raced," said women's distance coach Mitchell Baker. "She was posed the entire way. Even when the front group broke away she hung in with the chase pack and really finished well and negative split like she's been doing all year. Certainly she had a good chance to qualify, but had to beat a lot of really talented women and executed the game plan perfectly."
In the men's 1,500m run, junior Berg came in sixth overall and finished fourth in heat with a 3:46.95 to advance to the championships.
Lowry, Brown University's male varsity athlete of the year, qualified in the 5,000m run on the final day of competition with a fourth place time of 14:02.36.
Also competing this week for the Bears were sophomore Heidi Caldwell (Hanover, NH), who ran the 5,000m in 16:38.76, and freshman Lauren Waterbury (St. Louis, MO) ran the 400m in 54.39 to place seventh in heat six.
In the field events, junior Lacey Craker (Baraboo, WI) tossed a 181-7 (55.36m) in the hammer throw, and sophomore Niina Al-Hasssn (Secaucus, NJ) finished the javelin with a 136-2 (41.50m) distance.
For the men, sophomore John Spooney (Northfield, OH) earned a 21.38 in the 200m, finishing 7th in his heat, and senior Matt Duffy (Oakland, CA) competed in 5,000m and finished with a 14:22.78. Junior Kevin Cooper (Waterford, IRL) raced in the 1,500m and crossed the line in 3:50.17.
