PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown women's tennis standout Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) has been named the 2008 ITA East Regional Rookie of the Year. Aboubakare adds this honor to an impressive list that includes Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Brown's Outstanding First Year Female Athlete.
Aboubakare made her presence felt on the Brown courts immediately this past fall, winning her first six singles matches. At the conclusion of the fall, she was ranked 16th in the East Region in singles. Aboubakare finished the year with an overall singles record of 28-6, including a 16-3 mark in dual matches, playing all at #1 singles. Her 28 singles wins rank second all-time at Brown for singles wins in a season, and are the most since Julia Martynova '99 also had 28 in 1997. In the Ivy League, Aboubakare was 6-1, including a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kim, the Ivy Player of the Year.
In doubles action, Aboubakare was 20-12 overall, with a 14-6 mark in dual matches, again all at #1 doubles. Her 20 doubles wins rank sixth all-time for doubles wins in a season. Overall, Aboubakare posted 48 wins and just 18 losses. Her 48 wins rank fourth all-time at Brown for combined wins in a season, the most since Leela Raju '99 earned 46 wins in 1997.
