Bears Win Final Non-League Match, 5-2, over Furman

Greenville, SC - The Brown women's tennis team (14-2) posted a 5-2 victory over Furman on Friday afternoon in the Bears' final non-league match of the season. The win snapped Furman's five-match winning streak, as freshman Cassandra Herzberg (Miami Beach, FL) posted a huge win over the 85th-ranked player in the nation, as she won, 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles.
Brown took the upper hand early in the match, winning all three doubles matches to earn the team point. Herzberg and sophomore Bianca Aboubakare (Orange, CA) claimed an 8-6 win at #1 doubles, snapping their opponents' five-match winning streak, while juniors Emily Ellis (Fort Worth, TX) and Kathrin Sorokko (Douglaston, NY) snapped their opponents' six-match winning streak with an 8-5 win at #3. Senior Sara Mansur (Houston, TX) and freshman Carissa Aboubakare (Orange, CA) claimed an 8-1 win at #2 for the three wins.
Highlighting the singles action was Herzberg's 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 singles over Monica Arguello, who is ranked #85 in the nation. Bianca Aboubakare also played a top-ranked opponent and narrowly fell at #1 singles, losing to 12th-ranked Laura Gioia in three sets, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-5. Brown won three of the remaining four matches in straight sets, as junior Tanja Vucetic (Aventura, FL) won 6-3, 6-1 at #3, Mansur won 6-4, 6-3 at #4, and freshman Julie Flanzer (Highland Park, IL) won 6-2, 6-1 at #6. Carissa Aboubakare played at #5 and, after splitting the first two sets, was forced to retire in the third as the Bears had to leave to catch their flight back to Providence.
Having concluded the non-league portion of their schedule with a 14-2 record, which includes three matches against Ivy competition, the Bears open Ivy play on Sunday afternoon at home when they host #43 Yale in a 12:00 noon match.
