Women’s Tennis Finishes Third at ECAC Championship

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown women's tennis team finished third at the ECAC Championship, upending two higher ranked teams in the tournament that ran Friday, Feb. 9 through Sunday, Feb. 11 at Jadwin Gymnasium.

Brown, the fifth seed of the tournament, squared off against fourth-seeded Penn in the first day of action on Friday. The Quakers were able to take the doubles point but the Bears fought back in singles and won the match, 4-2.

Penn opened with a 6-2 win in third doubles with Brown tying it with a 6-3 win in second doubles by senior Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Semi Oloko (Canton, Mass.). The Quakers then took the point with a 6-3 showing in the first spot. 

Senior Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) started singles play in the top spot with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win to knot the match. Sophomore Devon Jack (San Marino, Calif.) pulled the Bears ahead 2-1 with a second singles victory, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Penn came back with a win in fifth singles to again tied the match (2-2) before Brown clinched it with wins from junior Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) (6-4, 6-4, sixth) and Benotto (6-4, 1-6, 6-3, second).

The win from Friday pinned the Bears against top-ranked Princeton on Saturday where they were edged 4-2.

The Tigers took the doubles point with wins in third and second doubles. Jack opened singles play and tied the match 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win in third singles. Sophomore Juliana Simon (Los Angeles, Calif.) followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win in fourth singles to pull Brown ahead 2-1. Princeton responded with a win in sixth singles to tie the match and then went on to win with victories in first and second singles. Stearns put up a fight in first singles, playing against No. 100 Katrine Steffensen but fell 4-6, 5-7. Benotto also faced a ranked opponent, No. 81 Stephanie Schrage in second singles, and also battled but was defeated 2-6, 5-7.

In the third place match against third-seeded Cornell on Sunday the Bears went on to win the match 4-0. Stearns and Kowalsky led off in third doubles with a 6-2 win while Benotto and Oloko sealed the point with a 6-1 win in second doubles.

Benotto started singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the second spot. Simon increased the Bears' lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph in fourth singles. Kowalsky sealed the match for Brown in fifth singles with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The Bears next hosts Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 17 for a 12:00 p.m. match on the Ivy League Network.
