Women’s Tennis Concludes Play at the Brown Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team concluded play in the Brown Classic on Saturday, Nov. 7. The tournament hosted teams from Utah, Arkansas and Boston College. Play began on Friday, Nov. 6 and it will end on Sunday, Nov. 8 with Arkansas and Utah playing each other to close the event.

Brown opened up competition on Friday against Arkansas with a duo of sophomore Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) and junior Mariska Chamdani (Santa Clara, Calif.) defeating Peyton Jennings and Nicole Breaux, 7-6, in flight three doubles. For singles play, sophomore Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) defeated Makenzie Craft, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in flight two singles. Freshman Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was victorious in flight four singles, winning over Flavia Araujo, 6-1, 6-4. Senior Olivia Hsu (Santa Rosa, Calif.) rounded out the single wins by defeating Myrna Olaya, 6-3, 6-4.

Against Utah on Saturday, junior Dayna Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) and Benotto defeated Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley, 7-5, in flight one doubles. In flight two doubles, senior Hannah Camhi (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Ta won 6-4 over Sarah Richter and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa.

Lord and Benotto were also victorious in their singles events, with a 6-3, 6-2 flight one win for Lord, and a 6-3, 6-3 flight two win for Benotto. Ta and Stearns kept things rolling and won flight three and four singles, Ta winning, 6-2, 6-3 and Stearns winning 1-6, 6-2, 10-8.

The Bears are off until Saturday, Jan. 23 when they compete against Penn State at Vanderbilt in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
