PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team opened the 2015 fall season this past weekend, hosting the Brown Invitational from Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 27. The Bears welcomed student-athletes from the UMass, Rutgers, Harvard, Stony Brook, Boston University and St. John's.
For flight one singles, junior Dayna Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) won the back draw, defeating Ana Tyazusta of UMass, 6-1, 7-6.
Freshman Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) started off strong in her first collegiate match in flight two singles, winning her first match against Stony Brook's Nadia Smergut, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the semifinals. In the semis, Ta won the first set, 7-5, but was unable to keep momentum and was eventually defeated by Boston University's Lauren Davis, who took the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2. Ta won the third place match against Boston University's Iryna Kostirko, 6-2, 3-6 (10-8).
Sophomore Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) reached flight three back draw and defeated Amy He, 3-6, 6-2 (10-8).
Senior Ammu Mandalap (Princeton Junction, N.J.) reached the flight four finals, but lost to Louise Badoche of Stony Brook, 7-5, 6-2. Fellow senior Olivia Hsu (Santa Rosa, Calif.) won the flight six back draw, 6-3, 7-6, against UMass' Arielle Griffin.
In flight one doubles play, Lord and sophomore Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) reached the semifinals, with match wins of 8-5 and 8-2, before falling 8-5 to Amanda Lin and Annika Ringblom of Harvard who won the double flight. Senior Hannah Camhi (Woodbury, N.Y.) and Ta reached the quarterfinals in the flight, falling to Nikki Kallenberg and Amy He of Harvard, 8-1. The duo of Camhi and Ta went 3-for-1 for the weekend and defeated the #8 team in the Northeast Region in Rutgers.
In flight two doubles, Mandalap and Chamdani advanced to the semifinals (8-5) before being defeated by the eventual doubles champion, Isabel Jasper and June Lee of Harvard.
Brown will next compete at the Yale Invitational, which will run from Friday Oct. 9 through Sunday, Oct. 11.
